Senior Treasury official Brainard to visit China WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Lael Brainard, Treasury's undersecretary for international affairs, is on her way to China to meet senior Chinese government officials Friday about a broad range of economic matters, the department announced Thursday. Brainard will reiterate the White House position that the yuan remains substantially undervalued despite some appreciation. Brainard's visit comes ahead of a Senate procedural vote on Monday on a bill that is designed to pressure China into letting the value of its currency rise. The bill stems from lawmakers' frustration that the Treasury Department has declined to label China a currency manipulator.
