New Polls Show Kerry Climbing Ahead
Dear America,
I wanted to give our top Democratic activists an update on where our campaign stands, and the grassroots way you can help the Kerry campaign and the Democratic National Committee on our road to victory.
George Bush and Dick Cheney have spent $70 million on misleading ads. That's almost double what John Kerry has spent taking his positive message directly to the American people. Yet in nearly every poll, we're ahead.
Just because we're up in May, we can't pat ourselves on the back and wait for Election Day. George Bush isn't resting. Every day it seems he flips a coin: heads he distorts John Kerry's record, tails he misleads America about his own. Day in, day out, those attacks can take a toll.
But we have three powerful weapons: the truth, John Kerry's lifetime of strength and service, and you -- our online supporters who have allowed us to hold our own on the airwaves against Bush's negative and misleading ads.
Recent polls draw a clear picture: we're leading, but locked in a neck-and-neck battle. Most likely, it will be that way from now through Election Day.
Some Figures That Should Alarm George Bush
A month ago on April 18th, George Bush led by five points in the polls. Now, $70 million in misleading ads later, John Kerry is up by five points, 51 percent to 46 percent. Even more amazing is that polling among swing state voters shows John Kerry leading there as well. George Bush's approval rating is at an all time low of 46 percent, and 58 percent of Americans disapprove of George Bush's handling of Iraq.
George Bush's cynical attacks are backfiring while John Kerry's positive message is carrying the day. Our campaign is making substantial progress and George W. Bush's campaign is in big trouble.
An Unprecedented Get-out-the-Vote Program
While TV ads and other targeted efforts to push out our message are vital, there is no better way to get someone to the polls to vote for your candidate than face-to-face contact. This election, which is shaping up to be as close as 2000, will be won or lost on our ability to get voters to the polls on November 2.
So John Kerry and the DNC are creating the largest and most efficient field operation ever devised. With your help, we'll put hundreds of thousands of volunteers on the ground in battleground states, registering voters and getting them out to vote on Election Day.
Just one organizer can lead 50 local leaders, who in turn direct 100 volunteers each to contact thousands of voters. The result will be millions of direct face-to-face contacts with Americans, urging them to vote for John Kerry. It is a massive get-out-the-vote program the likes of which have never been seen before.
What's Next
It's going to take everything we have to beat George Bush -- but with your help, we will do it. In the coming weeks, we will be asking you for contributions, and we will be recruiting tens of thousands of you to volunteer across the country to help us win the election. So stay tuned.
Hang in there and keep working. Together, we'll win.
Thank you,
Mary Beth Cahill
