U.S. stocks rise in broad advance; S&P 500 back above key technical level
U.S. stocks rose on Tuesday, with major indexes recovering from early weakness, although trading was volatile following a steep drop in the previous session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1% to 23,883. The S&P 500 added 0.8% to 2,603 and returned above its 200-day moving average, which it had closed under in Monday's session for the first time in nearly two years. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 1% and returned to positive territory for the year. Gains were broad, with all 11 S&P 500 sectors higher on the day. Seeing particular boosts were financial stocks, which rose 1% on the day as the top-performing sector. Consumer-discretionary stocks rose 0.9%, supported by Amazon and Netflix , both of which saw sharp declines in Monday's broad-based selloff. Amazon rose 1.2% while Netflix was up 1.6%.
