Hoyer Statement on House Passage of Resolution Condemning the Actions of Neo-Nazis and White Supremacists in Charlottesville
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House passed a resolution by unanimous consent, which condemns the actions and violence of Neo-Nazis and white supremacists in Charlottesville, VA:
“Tonight, the House joined the Senate in condemning the hateful actions by neo-Nazis and white supremacists in Charlottesville last month in the strongest of terms. Our resolution now makes its way to President Trump’s desk, who will have a new opportunity to make clear that there were not ‘many sides’ to what happened and that there can be no equivocation when it comes to bigotry and violent racism. The murder of an innocent woman who was peacefully protesting the hate-march was not only an act of terror but a demonstration of cowardice. In the free marketplace of ideas, only those with the weakest of arguments ever resort to violence. Those who marched for hate in Charlottesville ought to remember: eyes that burn with blinding hatred cannot look to the future. I urge the President to see with clarity that the only response to what occurred is the kind of forceful, unambiguous condemnation of the kind the Congress has now unanimously declared.”
