Hoyer Statement on August Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for August:
"With our economy having gained just 156,000 private sector jobs in August, it is becoming more clear that the momentum of our recovery is imperiled by the uncertainty and lack of clear policy direction from the Trump Administration. Warning signs abound in this report. Weekly earnings dropped, the past two months' job gains were revised down, and the unemployment rate has ticked up.
"While our economy remains resilient, slower job and wage growth will continue becoming the norm if Republicans in Congress and the President continue to ignore their responsibility to take actions that promote certainty, stability, and growth. The potential for self-inflicted wounds and manufactured crises has grown with each week that Republicans delay working with Democrats to avert a government shutdown and a catastrophic default in the near term, and to lay a foundation for job creation and sustainable economic growth in the longer term.
"As we head into September, Congress and the Administration must work together to reassure American businesses and workers that our jobs recovery will continue and not stall. Democrats are ready to do our part to provide greater certainty to the private sector and help create good jobs that enable more of our people to make it in America."
