Hoyer Statement on Republicans' Latest Delay In The FY18 Budget Process
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans delayed their budget markup for Fiscal Year 2018:
“By postponing their budget markup for FY2018, House Republicans will place an already-late process even further behind schedule, risking a shutdown in September if appropriations are not completed on time. It is deeply concerning that Republicans seem more focused on the budget process merely as a vehicle for enacting partisan tax reform through reconciliation rather than because budgets are how Congress sets priorities for our nation. If Republicans are serious about tax reform, they shouldn’t be proactively planning to push it through the Senate with only fifty Republican votes. In the meantime, I urge them to engage in the serious work of governing and put forward a budget proposal that shows the American people what their priorities are for addressing the challenges we face.”
