Hoyer Statement on Official Nomination of Scott Garrett to be President of the Export-Import Bank
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump officially nominated former Representative Scott Garrett to be President of the Export-Import Bank:
"In 2015, a majority of Republican Members joined every Democratic Member of the House to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank against an effort by some on the extreme right, including Rep. Scott Garrett, to shut down permanently this agency that directly helps U.S. businesses create jobs in America. I was proud to help lead that bipartisan effort, which showed the broad and deep support for the Ex-Im Bank and export-driven jobs. For President Trump to nominate to lead the Bank and serve on its board one of its most vocal opponents runs counter to the clear interests of American businesses and workers and his own promise to support and create American jobs. I urge the Senate, which strongly supported reauthorization of the Bank, to defeat the Garrett nomination and send a message of support for American export-driven jobs.
"We see a pattern emerging of this President putting individuals in charge of key government agencies and programs who question whether they ought to exist or carry out their stated missions. This is yet another example of the President taking actions that directly break his own promises to voters and that put economic growth in jeopardy. The President owes it to the American people to get serious about supporting jobs that pay well and allow American families to make it in America."
