Hoyer Statement on May Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for May:
“The measure by which this Administration must be judged, first and foremost, is whether Americans' lives are getting better, not worse, and whether their families have greater economic security, not less. That only 147,000 new private sector jobs were created in May - with declines in manufacturing, slowing wage growth, and a rapidly shrinking labor force - is a glaring indication that President Trump is not achieving these goals. Rather than economic security, he is offering uncertainty and volatility.
“In these few months since he took office, President Trump has pursued a dangerous set of policies that will hurt American workers and make it harder for our people to get ahead. From the TrumpCare bill that would force millions to pay higher insurance premiums to his draconian budget proposal that would slash investment in programs that help families get ahead, this Administration’s approach to economic policy risks squandering all the gains we’ve made over our recovery and does nothing to help those working two or three grueling jobs just to squeak by each month.
“Democrats will continue to push for Congress to get serious about ensuring that our middle class doesn’t collapse under the weight of President Trump’s dangerous proposals. I urge Republicans to work with us to ensure that we can transform the continued job growth of our recovery into real economic security for the American people.”
