Hoyer Statement on CIA Assessment of Russian Interference in the Election
WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today:
"Reports of a CIA assessment that Russia tried to sway our election through hacks and then selectively releasing information are extremely alarming. Equally alarming is President-Elect Trump's reaction to those reports. Rather than taking seriously the facts provided by the CIA, the President-Elect continues to deny the source of the hacks and their purpose, while disparaging the men and women of our intelligence community. Such statements denigrate the dangerous and difficult work that those in our intelligence community perform every day to defend our nation.
"Congress must make its top priority the full investigation of Russia's actions and its efforts to influence and undermine our democracy. Congress should act swiftly to hold hearings on this critical issue. Democrats and Republicans must work together to root out any foreign interference in our political system.
"I further hope the current administration - and the next - will use all the tools at their disposal to send a clear message to Russia that there are costs for its actions. The Department of Justice should consider prosecution based on unlawful access to stored information and other statutes. I also strongly encourage the Department of the Treasury, before President Obama’s term concludes, to impose sanctions on actors involved in this hacking."
