Hoyer Statement on Violence Against Civilians in Aleppo
WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today:
“Earlier this year, a candidate for President of the United States asked ‘What is Aleppo?’ The answer is: a tragedy. A tragedy reminiscent of the many others resulting from the unwillingness of the community of nations, which promote international law, to act in the face of a slaughter committed by a dictator supported by a despot, Vladimir Putin, both of whom care little for international law or human rights.
“I was horrified to hear reports of atrocities committed against civilians in Aleppo by Syrian forces, above and beyond those that have already been committed since the start of the civil war. The crimes being described today are reminiscent of some of the worst seen in the history of modern warfare. The Assad regime must answer for its crimes against the people of Aleppo and account fully for its criminal actions. We must not forget that Syria’s ally Russia is not only enabling Bashar al-Assad but is itself an active partner with his murderous regime.
“The lesson of history is that the despots of the world will continue their criminal acts unless confronted effectively by the nations committed to a world governed by law and not by force. What is Aleppo? Now, it becomes another tragic reminder of our collective failure to heed the lessons of the past.”
