Hoyer Statement on the Nomination of Rep. Mick Mulvaney to Serve as Budget Director
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the President-Elect announced his intent to nominate Rep. Mick Mulvaney to serve as Director of the Office of Budget and Management:
"If President-Elect Trump wishes to implement his economic agenda, which nonpartisan budget experts have said would create unprecedented deficits, it is surprising that he would choose someone like Rep. Mick Mulvaney to serve as his budget director. In Congress, Rep. Mulvaney has been among the most vocal opponents of government investment in our economy, promoting the kind of severe austerity measures like a ‘cut, cap, and balance’ scheme and ignoring the economic carnage of defaulting on our obligations or shutting down the government. Rep. Mulvaney and House Republicans will soon be forced to reconcile these priorities with Mr. Trump's proposed increases in spending, not only with regard to the massive infrastructure and defense expansions he has promised voters but also his pie-in-the-sky proposals for a border wall and the creation of an unconstitutional new deportation force.
"House Democrats will continue to push for budgets that not only promote fiscal sustainability but also prioritize expanding economic opportunity. We will also continue to defend against trillions of dollars in unpaid-for tax cuts that benefit the wealthy at the expense of working families, which President-Elect Trump and House Republicans have said will be a top priority next year. In the coming months, Congress will have to address the debt ceiling once more, and Rep. Mulvaney and the next administration will need to act responsibly to prevent a catastrophic default - something Rep. Mulvaney has refused to do in the past."
