Hoyer Statement on White House Report on Use of Military Force
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Obama Administration released a report detailing the United States' use of military force:
“Today, the Obama Administration took important steps to increase transparency and accountability when it comes to our nation’s use of military force and the doctrines governing our military actions. Notwithstanding necessary national security precautions, the people of this country deserve to know with certainty that their government is following international law and American law when it comes to decisions to use force and engage U.S. troops in combat. Many of these legal precepts and norms were established under American leadership in order to protect our military and strengthen the causes of justice, human rights, and peace around the world. As President Obama prepares to leave office, I applaud him for setting in writing and in one document a lasting legacy of his commitment to ensuring that those who serve us in national security faithfully adhere to the values and principles for which many of our young men and women in uniform gave their lives throughout our history.”
