Hoyer Statement on the Nomination of Rep. Tom Price to Serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Trump Administration
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Rep. Tom Price was announced as the President-Elect’s nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services:
"The nomination of Chairman Tom Price to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services raises red flags. To put in charge of the nation’s health care system and a trillion dollar budget someone who has never overseen anything larger than a Congressional committee ought to raise eyebrows when this position has historically been reserved for an individual with significant administrative experience. Furthermore, Chairman Price led efforts to repeal the reforms that ended discriminatory insurance practices and expanded health coverage to more than 20 million Americans, and he is someone whose appointment would put Medicare in danger.
"Whoever leads the Department of Health and Human Services in the next administration will have to work closely with both Democrats and Republicans in Congress to ensure that all Americans can access quality, affordable health care and that nobody faces a gap in access to coverage. In addition to ensuring the stability of the health insurance marketplace, Chairman Price must abandon his efforts to turn Medicare into a voucher program and instead work with Democrats to protect the Medicare guarantee for current and future seniors. He must also safeguard women's access to reproductive care without facing undue hurdles or added costs.”
