Hoyer Remarks at Press Conference on the Need to Immediately Implement Department of Labor's Overtime Rule
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined House and Senate Democrats and worker advocates at a press conference today on the need to immediately implement the Department of Labor's overtime rule. The rule, which would have gone into effect today and expanded overtime eligibility to 4.2 million workers, was halted by a federal judge in Texas on November 22. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:
“Today, the Department of Labor’s overtime rule would have taken effect, providing a pay raise to four million workers across our economy and boosting wages by $12 billion over the next ten years.
“For those who earn less than $47,500 a year, overtime pay is a critical tool used to reach for economic security and a place in the middle class.
“I strongly disagree with the ruling that put this new rule on hold.
“Now, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are getting ready to take a vote next year to scrap this rule altogether.
“They want Americans who work more to make less.
“That isn’t right – and it won’t help Americans get ahead or grow our economy.
“The American people – the American workers and their families – will surely hold Donald Trump and Republicans accountable if they do away with this overtime rule that puts money in the pockets of hardworking people.
“Democrats will continue to stand up for the principle that hard work should always lead to opportunities for workers and their families to make it in America.”
