Hoyer Statement on September Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for September:
"The Bureau of Labor Statistics report released this morning demonstrates that the solid pace of our jobs recovery is continuing, with September marking six years of continual job growth. With 167,000 new private sector jobs, more Americans entering the workforce, and gains in wages, we are making real progress – but our work is far from done. Congress must work together to provide greater economic certainty and to make key investments in growth so that all Americans can experience the benefits of our economic recovery.
"We cannot achieve that goal if extreme House Republicans continue their pattern of holding our economy and creditworthiness hostage by playing dangerous, partisan games with default and government shutdowns, or if they continue to oppose policies that will help families, such as paid family leave, equal pay for equal work, more affordable higher education, and an increase in the minimum wage. Democrats will continue to push for those policies, as well as for the adoption of legislation under our ‘Make It In America’ plan to expand entrepreneurship and innovation.
"Ultimately, the measure of our economic strength isn't how many new jobs we create but whether a job in America leads to opportunities to secure the dream that has always been America's promise. I urge House Republicans to join us in working to take our economy from recovery to resurgence and to ensure that hard work always leads to a secure place in a growing middle class."
