Hoyer Statement on Violence in Syria
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today:
“I am shocked and outraged that the Syrian regime and Russian forces continue to attack civilian targets indiscriminately in Aleppo. What before was unimaginable, criminal brutality has now sadly become the norm in this conflict. The international community must hold parties responsible for these deliberate killings, including the strike on a clearly marked Red Crescent aid convoy last month and the continued attacks on hospitals in the region. The breakdown of talks on cooperation, instigated by Russia's bad faith, only exacerbate the situation.
“The continuing loss of life underscores the urgency of American action to hold the Assad regime and its Russian allies accountable. As a starting point, I fully support passage of legislation to address human rights violations by the Assad regime and its supporters. We must send a signal from the United States Congress to the Syrian people and all aid workers who risk their lives in that country that our nation has not forgotten them. I also support the President’s consideration of all options to stop the bloodshed, including targeted use of force against the Assad regime.”
