Hoyer Statement on the Passage of Legislation to Fund the Government Through December
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight after the House passed legislation to fund the government through December:
“Tonight’s actions by the House will prevent a government shutdown, and I am pleased that Democrats and Republicans were able to reach an agreement to keep the government open before Friday’s deadline. While it is a positive step that this Continuing Resolution includes the Senate’s bipartisan emergency Zika supplemental funding of $1.1 billion and assistance to those facing horrible flooding in Louisiana, I would have preferred that it also appropriate funds to address the crisis of lead poisoning in Flint, Michigan, due to contaminated drinking water.
“However, I am glad that Rep. Kildee's amendment authorizing funding for Flint was adopted in the House version of the Water Resources Development Act and that Senator McConnell has given his word that Senate conferees will insist on inclusion of Flint funding in the final version of the Water Resources Development Act to be brought to the Floor during the lame duck session. Rep. Kildee and his Democratic colleagues in the Michigan delegation deserve great credit for their unrelenting efforts on behalf of the families of Flint, and I will continue to work closely with them to ensure that funding is secured as soon as possible.”
