Hoyer Statement on House Democrats' Zika Discharge Petition
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Democrats filed a discharge petition to force a vote on the President's supplemental request to provide funding to combat the spread of the Zika virus:
“Today, House Democrats filed a discharge petition to force a vote on the President’s supplemental request to provide funding to combat the Zika threat. For months, House Republicans have held up funding instead of treating Zika as the dangerous public health crisis that it is. Even as the CDC announces that more and more Americans are being affected, House Republicans are debating just how little to spend and which important programs they will cut in order to offset it. That’s not the way Congress ought to meet the challenge of a public health emergency.
“With summer now upon us, and mosquito activity picking up in more of the country, Congress ought to act swiftly to provide public health officials with the tools they need to research and develop vaccines and diagnostics, control the mosquito population, and ensure access to health services, particularly for pregnant women. House Democrats will continue to push for urgent action, and I call on Speaker Ryan and Leader McCarthy to allow a vote on the President’s Zika supplemental request as soon as possible.”
