Hoyer Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Voting Rights Case
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in the Evenwel v. Abbott voting rights case:
“Today’s unanimous Supreme Court decision makes it unambiguously clear that every single person living in our country deserves equal representation in Congress – that ‘one person, one vote’ means exactly that. Efforts to weaken the representation of those living in areas of high-density population, often home to low-income and minority families, undermine our democracy, and I am pleased that the Court recognized that fact without dissent.
“I’ve been proud to fight for equal access to the ballot box, both through the successful enactment of my Help America Vote Act legislation to address problems with voting systems identified during the disputed 2000 presidential election as well as through ongoing efforts to restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act, which the Supreme Court weakened in 2013. I will continue to push for legislation to ensure that every eligible American can cast a vote without hindrance and have that vote counted accurately.”
