Hoyer Statement on House GOP’s 63rd Vote to Repeal the Affordable Care Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans failed to override the President's veto, which was their sixty-third vote to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act since 2011 and the twelfth vote to attack women's health this Congress:
“Today, in Republicans’ sixty-third vote to repeal or undermine the cost savings and patient protections of the Affordable Care Act and their twelfth vote to attack women’s health, Democrats sustained President Obama’s veto to ensure that millions of Americans will not lose health insurance coverage and that women across the country would not lose access to critical health care services. Had Republicans succeeded in overriding the President’s veto, the number of uninsured Americans would have increased by an additional 22 million people, health insurance premiums would have risen approximately 20%, and our deficit outlook would have worsened over the long term. House Democrats will continue to defend the reforms we enacted in 2010 that are slowing the growth of health care costs, contributing responsibly to deficit reduction, and preventing discrimination against consumers.
“While Speaker Ryan and his Republican colleagues have vowed to replace the Affordable Care Act, six years and sixty-three votes later they have yet to introduce an alternative. America cannot afford to turn the clock back to the days when insurance companies could charge women higher premiums than men and deny coverage to those with pre-existing conditions or to a time when the costs of health care were ballooning out of control, which is the only alternative Republicans have put forward with their votes. I will continue to stand with my Democratic colleagues in opposing those efforts and working to expand access to affordable, quality coverage for every American.”
