Hoyer Statement on Women's Equality Day
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Women’s Equality Day, which this year marks the 95th anniversary of the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment:
“Ninety-five years ago, a milestone victory was achieved for democracy in America and for the courageous women from across the nation who stood up, spoke out, marched, protested, and endured unjust imprisonment while demanding the equal right to vote. Today we celebrate the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution and all those who worked hard to secure the vote for women. No democracy can truly be called such when half of all its voices are stifled and suppressed.
“As we reflect on this important anniversary, we must recognize that the work of securing equality remains unfinished – and it is now our work to complete. We have made much progress as a nation, with women leading businesses, serving in the highest offices of government, standing sentry on the front lines of our defense, proudly representing our country in sports, and securing great achievements in the arts and sciences. But many women still earn far less than men for the same work, women’s freedom to make health care choices are under threat, and too many women and girls are victims of domestic violence. That’s why we must continue to ensure that our nation is moving forward and not backward when it comes to women’s rights and full equality. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus to ensure that Congress is doing its part to make full equality a reality.”
