Hoyer Statement on House Republican Immigration Reform Principles
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in response to House Republicans' immigration reform principles announced today:
“I am encouraged that House Republicans have put forward a set of principles for immigration reform and have now expressed a readiness to discuss how to fix our broken immigration system. Issuing principles is a first step, and Republicans’ willingness to engage on this issue will ultimately be judged not by a statement of principles but by whether they can turn those principles into legislation and compromise in order to achieve reform. House Democrats are ready to do our part and work across the aisle to achieve results.
“The Senate has already acted, having passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill in June with a strong bipartisan vote of 68-32. Now it is time for the House to take up reform that will enable 11 million undocumented immigrants to emerge from the shadows and open a path to citizenship for those who want to participate in building our nation and its economy. In the House, Rep. Joe Garcia has introduced a comprehensive immigration reform bill, H.R. 15, that has bipartisan support, and which I am proud to cosponsor.
“I hope Republicans will heed the calls from a broad coalition of business leaders, labor unions, faith communities, and advocacy organizations for achieving a real and lasting solution to our immigration challenge without delay. Achieving comprehensive immigration reform will provide a strong boost to our economy and help us maintain our competitive edge in technology, innovation, and manufacturing. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make progress on this issue in the weeks to come.”
