Hoyer Statement on President Obama's Remarks on Manufacturing
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Obama announced a new private-public Manufacturing Innovation Institute:
“I am pleased that the President is continuing to make investments that support our manufacturing sector a priority. Manufacturing jobs traditionally have been high-skill, high-wage jobs that afford workers the opportunity to secure a place in our middle class. That’s why Democrats in the House will keep the focus on our Make It In America agenda in 2014.
“While Republicans in Congress block the consideration of Make It In America bills to boost our manufacturing sector and grow jobs, President Obama has taken steps using his executive authority to advance this cause so critical to increasing our economic competitiveness and putting more Americans back to work. The President deserves credit for the actions he has taken on his own, but until Congress makes investing in a strong manufacturing sector a priority, the steps that can be taken without passing legislation are very limited.
“With support from both Democrats and Republicans, Make It In America bills are the best shot for Congress to have a real and lasting impact on boosting our economy and helping the private sector create the high-skill, high-wage jobs that can help grow a strong middle class. I hope Speaker Boehner and Leader Cantor will work with us to move Make It In America legislation to the Floor soon so Congress can build on the manufacturing gains we have seen in recent months and help more of our people find jobs.”
