Senate Banking Committee backs Yellen to lead Fed WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The Senate Banking Committee on Thursday backed the nomination of Janet Yellen to lead the Federal Reserve. With 14 yes votes and 8 no votes, senators sent Yellen's nomination to the Senate floor for a confirmation vote. Members of both parties expect the 67-year-old will be confirmed as the first woman to lead the U.S. central bank. Yellen was backed by all of the panel's Democrats except West Virginia's Joe Manchin. Republicans Bob Corker of Tennessee, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Mark Kirk of Illinois also voted to approve her.
