September job openings rise to 3.91 million
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Job openings at U.S. workplaces rose to 3.91 million in September from 3.84 million in August, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Friday. Compared with same period in the prior year, September's job openings rose 8.6%, as private openings increased 9.8% to 3.53 million, and government openings declined to 382,000 from 387,000. With 11.26 million unemployed people in September, there were about 2.9 potential job seekers per opening, just about matching August's result. In September 2012, there were 12.08 million unemployed people -- about 3.4 potential seekers per opening. When the recession began in December 2007, there were less than two potential job seekers per opening. The number of separations, such as quits and layoffs, slightly rose to 4.43 million in September from 4.41 million in August. Meanwhile, the total number of hires ticked up to 4.59 million in September from 4.56 million in August. The level of hires was almost 5 million when the recession began.
