Hoyer Statement on 75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement marking November 9-10 as the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht, also known as “the Night of Broken Glass:" “I join in remembering the horrific Nazi pogrom of Kristallnacht seventy-five years ago. The destruction and hate-driven murder that occurred over two days marked a turning point toward a horrific genocide whose pain continues to be felt by all those throughout the world who believe in justice. In marking this anniversary, we recall not only the terrible destruction of Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues and the killing of innocents but also the desecration of a community and culture that had thrived for centuries. The Nazis burned books, destroyed sacred objects, and instilled fear into the hearts of millions. They sent thousands to concentration camps, marking the beginning of mass deportations of Jews, Roma, LGBT individuals, people with disabilities, and political prisoners. Seventy-five years later, let us rededicate ourselves to the never-ending task of standing up against hatred and confronting persecution with a firm resolve to ensure that justice always triumphs.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
