Hoyer Statement on GDP for Third Quarter 2013 WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the advance estimate of GDP growth for the third quarter of 2013: "Today's report from the Commerce Department that our gross domestic product grew at an annual rate of 2.8% last quarter – the fastest pace in a year – is a strong indication that our nation's economy continues to be resilient, in spite of a lack of certainty caused by partisan dysfunction in Congress. While this is welcome news, Congress must work to overcome negative effects of the government shutdown, which will be reflected in the next quarterly report, by establishing a clear policy direction on a number of key issues, including balanced deficit reduction, replacing the irrational sequester, reforming our tax code, passing comprehensive immigration reform, and advancing measures to help businesses expand and create jobs. "House Democrats' Make It In America plan for jobs and competitiveness, along with the complementary Senate manufacturing plan unveiled last week, presents an opportunity for both parties to work together, invest in economic growth and help put more of our people back to work. Many of the bills under our plan already have bipartisan support. I hope that today's positive news will encourage more Republicans to work across the aisle with Democrats to move jobs legislation forward in both chambers."
