Hoyer Statement on Senate Committee Markup of School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee approved the School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act, which is cosponsored by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) and is companion legislation to the House bill Whip Hoyer cosponsored with Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN):
“By approving the School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act, which will save lives by ensuring that students suffering from food allergies have access to life-saving epinephrine, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee today took an important step toward its enactment into law. I thank Senators Durbin, Kirk, and their cosponsors from both sides of the aisle for their work to move this legislation forward. The bipartisan support it has received in both chambers sends an important message of support to food allergy sufferers and their families.
“I was proud to introduce the School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act in the House along with Rep. Dr. Phil Roe of Tennessee. As the grandfather of a child with severe food allergies, I know firsthand how frightening and dangerous an allergic reaction can be. The House passed our measure in July, endorsing legislation that will encourage schools to stock emergency epinephrine on-site and to authorize certain staff members to administer it in the event of life-threatening anaphylaxis. An anaphylactic reaction can occur within only seconds of exposure to an allergen, placing an individual at risk of death if emergency steps are not taken within minutes – often less than the time it takes for emergency responders to arrive. I hope that the full Senate will act swiftly to pass this bill and send it to the President for his signature.”
