Hoyer Statement on Anniversary of Hurricane Sandy
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy hitting the East Coast:
“One year ago today, Hurricane Sandy struck the Atlantic coast with devastating effects: causing billions of dollars worth of damage, destroying homes and businesses, and leaving millions of people without power. Dozens of people were killed across several states, and I join in remembering their tragic deaths today.
“As we mark this anniversary and stand together in solidarity with the communities still working to rebuild, let us pay tribute to the first responders who worked hard to rescue survivors, extinguish fires, protect property, and prevent further loss of life. I join in thanking President Obama and Administration officials for coordinating a swift federal response as the storm approached and in its aftermath. I will continue to work in Congress to ensure that our coastal communities have all the resources they need to clean up, repair, and rebuild.
“In my visits to affected areas earlier this year, I saw firsthand both the extent of the devastation and the resilience of our communities as they came together to rebuild. Today, visitors once again walk along the rebuilt boardwalks of New Jersey’s Atlantic shore, while the trains that carry commuters beneath the Hudson River are full and running once more. New homes are being constructed, and communities are healing. The American tradition of picking ourselves back up after tragedy strikes, rallying together, and moving forward together endures.”
