Congress Passes Bipartisan Water Resources Legislation, Democrats Encourage Continued Compromise
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP After weeks of partisanship, I was pleased that this week, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill that will invest in our nation’s infrastructure. The Water Resources Reform and Development Act authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct, operate, and maintain water projects that aid navigation, mitigate storm and hurricane damage, restore ecosystems, and improve flood management. It is this spirit of bipartisan cooperation that I hope to see as Congress moves forward on other important legislation. This week, I joined President Obama in calling on House Republicans to allow a vote on a comprehensive immigration reform bill. In June, the Senate passed bipartisan immigration reform legislation, and House Democrats have introduced H.R. 15, a similar bill that strengthens border security, creates a pathway to citizenship, and helps retain talented individuals from other countries who come here to study so they can contribute to the economy. I will continue to urge my Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives to pass comprehensive immigration reform this year. I remain hopeful that over the coming months Congress will take meaningful bipartisan action on a number of critical issues, including completing work on a budget conference, passing job creation legislation, a farm bill that includes adequate funding for nutrition assistance programs, legislation that fully restores the Voting Rights Act, and comprehensive immigration reform. Sincerely yours,
STENY H. HOYER
