U.S. stocks finish with July gains after Fed move
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks on Wednesday finished little changed after the Federal Reserve offered few clues on potential changes to its monetary policy. At 4 p.m. Eastern, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 12.90 points, or 0.1%, to 15,507.69, after rising as high as 15,634.32, clearing intraday and closing records reached last week. The S&P 500 Index gained nearly 1 point to 1,686.67, after rising to an intraday high of 1,698.44, putting it above its record close and a fraction below its intraday record of 1,698.78. "The S&P 500 continues to knock on the door at 1,700 without much luck. Eventually we think this psychological resistance will be taken out, triggering a small rally to the 1,735 to 1,765 area," wrote Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, in emailed commentary. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 11.03 points, or 0.3%, to 3,627.49.
