Hoyer Statement on Manufacturing Report
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Institute for Supply Management released its report for June:
“I am encouraged that our manufacturing sector grew in June, but the uncertainty manufacturers continue to face as a result of the irrational sequester and Congress’s failure to achieve a big, balanced solution to deficits still hampers their ability to invest, expand, and create jobs. Congress must act quickly and responsibly to end this uncertainty by reaching an agreement on deficit reduction that can replace the sequester with a balanced and sensible alternative – and there must be a concerted effort to invest in competitiveness and job creation.
“Over the past three years, House Democrats have put forward a number of job-creating proposals through our Make It In America plan that are bipartisan and have the support of manufacturers, innovators, and workers. In April, we outlined four core areas where Congress ought to take immediate action: adopting a national manufacturing strategy, promoting U.S. exports, encouraging the return of jobs and innovation from overseas, and securing a twenty-first century workforce. House Democrats – along with a number of Republicans – have introduced bills that will achieve progress in these four areas, and they deserve consideration on the Floor.
“I hope the Speaker and Majority Leader will work with House Democrats and with their own members who have cosponsored Make It In America legislation to move jobs legislation forward. I also urge the Speaker to appoint budget conferees without further delay so that negotiations on a budget – and on a big, balanced agreement to reduce deficits and replace the sequester – can move ahead before the uncertainty our manufacturers face becomes even greater.”
