Michigan's 9th Congressional District is contained within Oakland County in the southeast areas of the state of Michigan and encompasses most of the county. It is the only congressional district to lie entirely within Oakland County. Like Oakland County as a whole, the 9th Congressional District has historically been moderately Republican. However, a combination of demographic shifts, the economic crisis, and the association of incumbent Joe Knollenberg with the George W. Bush administration led to the election of Democratic former State Senator and Michigan Lottery commissioner Gary Peters in the election of 2008. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan%27s_9th_congressional_district
