Hoyer Joins World Parliamentarians in Calling for Action to “Stop the Horror” in Sudan
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer joined a global coalition of 98 politicians from the United States, United Kingdom and Australia calling for urgent action to address the humanitarian crisis in the Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile regions of Sudan. Mr. Hoyer signed the letter addressed to the coalition’s respective Foreign Ministers urging them to lead the UN Security Council to action on Sudan at this critical moment.
“Ten years after the atrocities in Darfur, Sudan first began, I stand with my Congressional colleagues, and our colleagues from the United Kingdom and Australia, in calling for immediate action to address the latest humanitarian crisis taking place in Sudan,” said Whip Hoyer. “With well over a million people affected by the ongoing violence and the threat of imminent famine facing this increasingly vulnerable population, it is imperative that the UN Security Council move swiftly to prevent more lives from being lost or displaced. We cannot let history repeat itself. It is time to stand for the people of Sudan.”
The letter calls on the Foreign Ministers to:
Demand an end to aerial bombardment and other attacks against civilians in Sudan, which have continued in Darfur and increased in intensity over the past year, particularly in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile;
Urgently address the humanitarian situation in Southern Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur;
Ensure a comprehensive approach to ending Sudan’s conflicts, focused on the long-standing need for peaceful and inclusive democratic transformation;
Take a leadership role in ensuring that those responsible for grave violations of international human rights and humanitarian law are held accountable; and
Encourage countries with close political and/or economic ties with Khartoum to join in pushing for the aforementioned actions.
