Statement on the Election in Libya Susan E. Rice U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations U.S. Mission to the United Nations New York, NY July 9, 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE I'm pleased to congratulate the people of Libya on the successful completion of their first national election in more than four decades. Libyans everywhere should know that the American people are inspired by the progress of their courageous transition. I applaud the Libyan High National Election Commission for its ongoing hard work to conduct this election credibly with the support of the United Nations and its partners. The success of durable democracy will rest on Libyan-built institutions that respond to the needs of the people. Libyans from every corner of the country will need to work together to establish an inclusive and representative government that can ensure security, advance broad-based opportunity, promote the rule of law and protect the rights of all Libyans, including women and minorities. This weekend’s election is an impressive step towards that future. As President Obama has said, the United States looks forward to working closely with Libya’s new leaders as they mark each new milestone in Libya's transition to democracy. ###
