Hoyer Statement on the Indiana Senate Race WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the primary defeat of Sen. Richard Lugar (IN): “Last night, Republicans drove out one of their most skilled legislators and seasoned diplomats in Sen. Richard Lugar. I am disappointed Republicans once again chose confrontation over compromise by voting for a candidate who promised to bring more partisanship—not less—to Washington. In fact, Sen. Lugar’s opponent was quoted as saying: ‘bipartisanship ought to consist of Democrats coming to the Republican point of view.’ “At a time when partisan gridlock is at an all-time high, we need to come together to find common ground, not retreat further into partisan divisions. We have seen the devastating effects of this, as Congress has all too often chosen the path of confrontation rather than consensus. As a result, we reached the brink of a government shutdown and defaulting on our debts. For Congress to be able to work together to get things done for the American people, we need Members who do not view compromise negatively. Regardless of party affiliation, this is a sad day for America.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
