On July 23, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton addressed the first-ever Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Entrepreneurship Summit in Bali, Indonesia. The Indonesian Minister of Trade Mari Pangestu convened the Summit and welcomed more than 200 entrepreneurs, investors, educators, and government officials from ASEAN nations, India and China.
The Regional Entrepreneurship Summit is a follow-on meeting to President Obama’s Summit on Entrepreneurship in April 2010, during which the Secretary launched the State Department’s Global Entrepreneurship Program.
To further expand and promote entrepreneurial opportunity in Indonesia, a group of business leaders in Indonesia established the Global Entrepreneurship Program-Indonesia earlier this year. As the local non-profit partner of the State Department’s entrepreneurship initiative, the Indonesian secretariat collaborates with the Global Entrepreneurship Program to create Angel investor groups in Indonesia, develop stronger mentoring and networking support systems, and celebrate the successful stories of Indonesian innovators. The U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Indonesia and the Global Entrepreneurship Program were integral in launching the Indonesian branch of the Program and actively advised the team on planning the Regional Entrepreneurship Summit, including the recruitment of keynote speaker Eric Schmidt, Chairman of Google.
The Regional Entrepreneurship Summit owes a special thanks to members of the Indonesian Government, including Minister of Trade Mari Pangestu and Chairman of Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board Gita Wirjawan for hosting and helping to coordinate the Summit. By planning the Regional Entrepreneurship Summit to coincide with the ASEAN Regional Forum and other ASEAN-related ministerials, leaders in the Indonesian government and Indonesia’s private sector are underscoring that entrepreneurship is a key element of both its and ASEAN’s economic policy agenda.
