FBI opened investigation into Trump ties to Russia after Comey firing: report
The FBI opened an investigation into whether President Donald Trump was working in Russia's interests after Trump fired James Comey as the bureau's director in May 2017, the New York Times reported late Friday. Citing law-enforcement insiders and other sources described as familiar with the situation, the Times said the counterintelligence investigation was opened alongside a probe, whose existence has long been known, into whether Comey's firing constituted obstruction of justice. Both investigations eventually came under the umbrella of the special-counsel probe led by Robert Mueller, though, according to the Times, it is unknown whether the counterintelligence aspect remains part of the Mueller inquiry. Trump lawyer Rudolph Giuliani reportedly told the Times the duration of the investigation and the fact that nothing is known to have come of it demonstrates that nothing untoward was found.
