China says it will resume trade talks with U.S.
China will send a delegation to the U.S. later this month for trade talks. the Chinese Commerce Ministry announced Thursday, according to multiple reports. In a short statement, the ministry said Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen will meet with David Malpass, the U.S. Treasury Department's under secretary for international affairs, to discuss "economic and trade issues between China and the U.S." The statement said China continued to oppose "unilateralism and trade protectionism." The meeting would be the first high-level talks between the world's biggest economic powerhouses since July. The two countries have imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on each other's goods in recent months, and President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on all Chinese imports. News of the talks had an immediate effect on Asian stock markets, which pared steep early losses, although most were still negative on the day.
