Hoyer Statement on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Day of Action
HOYER: TERMINATING DACA WOULD PROVE DEVaSTATING TO DREAMERS WHO WANT NOTHING MORE THAN TO CONTRIBUTE TO OUR NATION
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking a Day of Action to support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program following reports that President Trump may terminate the program and put thousands of immigrant youth at risk of deportation:
“The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program represents America at its best: a nation that seeks justice and opportunity for those who were brought here as children and have grown up wanting nothing more than to live in the nation they love and contribute to building its future. The President, in the past, has expressed this same sentiment, as have many on both sides of the aisle. Providing these young people with the opportunity to stay here free from the threat of deportation to unfamiliar lands and to work here legally is consistent with the values of our country.
“I continue to be deeply concerned by reports that the President may terminate this program. Doing so would prove devastating to the many DREAMers who answered the nation's call to apply for deferred action, including those I met with in my district this month. They and others like them want nothing more than to contribute to our nation and saw registering through the DACA program as the best way to do so. Ending this program would also undermine our economy as a whole, which would stand to lose $460 billion in GDP over the coming decade.
“In the absence of Congress enacting bipartisan immigration reform, which must remain our goal, the President ought to continue providing peace of mind to DREAMers that they need not live in fear of being sent away from the only home many of them have ever known. House Democrats will continue to stand up for DREAMers and against the immoral act of splitting up their families.”
