Hoyer Statement on Efforts to Skirt Iran Sanctions
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on reports that Iranian and Russian individuals and entities are trying to skirt American and international sanctions:
“Reports that Iranian and Russian individuals and entities are trying to circumvent American and international sanctions against arms transfers to and from Iran by moving them through Syria are deeply alarming. The Iran section of the bipartisan Russia-Iran-North Korea sanctions bill that Congress passed and that the President signed earlier this month was meant to target exactly this kind of malfeasance. Unfortunately, these activities are not covered under the JCPOA, which is why it is critical that the President enforce the new sanctions legislation immediately and in full in order to thwart Iran’s destabilizing regional activities.
“I visited Israel last week and met with Israelis who are deeply worried about the threat from Iran’s ballistic missile program and its continued efforts for regional hegemony. The United States must continue to make it absolutely clear that we will not allow Iran or its allies, like Russia, to cast a shadow of fear and terror over the Middle East.”
