Hoyer Statement on the Firing of White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the announcement that the President fired Steve Bannon:
"Steve Bannon should never have been allowed to work in the highest reaches of our government, and his departure is welcomed and appropriate. What needs to be dismissed as well is the mindset of division, discrimination, and demagoguery that Bannon and the President have demonstrated in their conduct and rhetoric during the campaign and over the last seven months. But no dismissal of a subordinate can distract from the responsibility President Trump bears himself for the outrageous statements he has made equivocating about the neo-Nazi, white supremacist rally in Charlottesville last weekend.
"Senator Corker was right to say that the President 'has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability or competence necessary in order to be successful' as a leader for our nation. I hope other Republicans in Congress and the Cabinet will be courageous and both denounce the President's dangerous statements and take meaningful actions to show that ours is not a nation of hate but one united for justice and equality. We must not forget where the buck stops: at the President's own desk and nowhere else."
