Hoyer Statement on July Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for July:
“According to the monthly report released this morning by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, our economy added 205,000 private sector jobs in July, just barely more than last month. While positive, there are signs that our jobs recovery may be slowing and that we are failing to build on the extraordinary gains we made during the Obama years. The previous four months saw fewer than 200,000 jobs added – unsettling after years of stronger growth. This month's numbers, while slightly better, are still cause for doubt about the sustainability of our recovery. I fear that the massive uncertainty created by a White House in chaos and a Congress hindered by paralyzing division within its House and Senate Republican majorities deters businesses from investing in our country and hiring American workers for good jobs that pay well and grow our middle class.
“Instead of working with Democrats to set policies that attract businesses and jobs, the President and his Republican allies in Congress have wasted months on partisan attempts to strip millions of Americans of their health coverage, dismantle rules that protect workers and consumers, and deport immigrant innovators and entrepreneurs. That’s no way to show the world our economy is open for business and eager to compete in the twenty-first century global marketplace. Neither is that the way to help American workers secure good jobs and access opportunities that enable them and their families to make it in America.
“Democrats are ready to partner across the aisle with Republicans and work with the President on real efforts to create jobs and opportunities for our people.”
