Senate TrumpCare Fails, Democrats Stand Ready to Work With Republicans to Improve the ACA
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, Senate Republicans attempted to pass various iterations of TrumpCare, each of which would have kicked millions of Americans off coverage and raised premiums for millions more. Now that a majority in the Senate has rejected all of these bills, it is time for Republicans to abandon TrumpCare and their repeal efforts, and work with Democrats to improve the Affordable Care Act for all Americans.
I was proud to watch Russia, Iran, and North Korea sanctions legislation pass both the House and Senate this week by large, veto-proof majorities. This bill holds Russia, Iran, and North Korea accountable for their destabilizing actions around the world and ensures both the Majority and Minority are able to exercise their oversight role over the implementation of Russian sanctions. I urge the President to sign this bill quickly. If not, he'll have to explain why he's putting Putin - not America - first.
In the House, we also voted on a minibus appropriations bill, which included $1.6 billion in funding for Trump's border wall. The funding for the wall was added through a legislative gimmick put in place by House Republican leadership, meaning they avoided debate and an up-or-down vote on the provision. By including the funding, Republicans are forcing American taxpayers to foot the bill for a wall that won't make our borders more secure.
When the House returns from the August District Work Period, we have a long to-do list to address. We must fund the government before September 30, ensure we can pay our nation’s bills, address flood insurance, and reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration. Democrats stand ready to work with Republicans to address these issues and get things done for the American people.
I wish you and your families a quiet, restful August.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
