Hoyer Statement on Republicans Lacking Votes to Repeal the ACA Without A Replacement
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after three Senators announced they will not vote to consider a bill repealing the Affordable Care Act without a replacement:
“It is clear that there is no majority in Congress either to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act with TrumpCare or to repeal it without regard to the consequences. But President Trump’s call for Republicans to take actions that will directly undermine the Affordable Care Act is not a reasonable or responsible next step. When the President says he is going to ‘let Obamacare fail,’ what he means is that his Administration intends to make it fail. That is not acceptable. No matter what the President suggests, he does ‘own it’ – and if the system is undermined on Republicans’ watch, they alone will be held to account.
“Democrats are ready to work with Republicans to improve the law and restore stability to our health care markets while bringing premiums down. It is time for Republicans to end their partisan crusade against the Affordable Care Act and accept that it is, in the words of Speaker Ryan, ‘the law of the land.’”
