Hoyer Statement on the House Republican Budget
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the release of the House Republican budget, 94 days past the deadline for the budget process to be completed:
“The budget resolution unveiled today by Chairman Black and House Republicans reminds me of the old adage that one mustn’t be fooled twice. Here, the authors of this budget believe they can fool Congress and the American people over and over again with the same magic asterisks and double-counting of unsubstantiated economic effects that haven’t added up in past years and certainly won’t this time. This budget doubles Trumpcare’s cuts to Medicaid, guts federal safety net programs that put a floor under those working their way through hard times, and cuts $1.3 trillion below sequester levels for investments in education, research, infrastructure, and other areas that help support job creation. Moreover, it sets out a procedure for Republicans to jam a partisan tax reform proposal through Congress instead of working to build the kind of consensus that most believe is necessary for real tax reform to be fair and successful in promoting economic certainty and growth.
“This is not a serious budget, and it ought not to be treated as such. Democrats will continue to promote fiscally sustainable and responsible budget policies that make it possible for our country to invest in its economy. I urge Republicans to set aside their duplicitous, draconian budget and work with Democrats to put America back on a sound fiscal path through bipartisan actions.”
