Hoyer Statement on President Trump's Undisclosed Second Meeting with Vladimir Putin
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Trump's previously undisclosed second meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20:
“Reports that President Trump met privately with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Germany last week, without any other American officials present, and failed to disclose that meeting until now, raise serious questions about what was discussed and whether their conversation included any promises regarding the easing of U.S. sanctions. President Putin’s regime has pursued a relentless program of undermining democracies across the world, including our own. He and his associates must be held accountable for their actions, though the Trump Administration seems to consistently support letting them off the hook. The American people deserve to know why.
“There ought to be no further delay in the House considering Russia sanctions legislation to impose consequences on President Putin and his government for the hacking of our recent election and attempts to do the same against our allies. While President Putin surely supports the provision added by Republicans to stop the minority from exercising oversight over any lifting of sanctions, this Putin provision substantially weakens the bill and must be changed. Both the Majority and Minority must be able to demand accountability from the Trump Administration in its exercise of sanctions authority.
“I urge the Speaker and Majority Leader to bring a bipartisan sanctions bill to the Floor before the August district work period.”
