Hoyer Statement on House Budget Committee Mark-Up of GOP Budget
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the House Budget Committee's all-night mark-up of the harmful GOP Budget:
“Last night, the House Budget Committee approved on a party line vote a Republican budget resolution that disinvests in America’s future and relies on a foundation that simply doesn’t add up. Democrats offered a number of amendments to prioritize economic growth for American business and workers; unfortunately, Republicans rejected them.
“Now it’s unclear whether the budget will even come to the House Floor for a vote due to deep divisions among Republicans. That is precisely because this budget is emblematic of a recurring problem: House Republican leaders insist again and again on crafting measures that appeal to their most radical members, only to find that they cannot muster the votes to pass them. The budget – something that should have been passed three months ago – is supposed to set Congress’s priorities for the year. If trillions of dollars in cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and other programs in order to fast track tax cuts to the wealthy are their priorities, it is no wonder this budget faces such long odds.
“I hope that last night’s markup will highlight for Republicans the futility of continuing down this partisan path. As we look ahead to the tasks of funding the government, paying our nation’s bills, and engaging in bipartisan tax reform, they would be wise to chart a different course.”
