Republicans Unveil Reckless, Irrational Budget, Continues to Struggle Over TrumpCare
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
House Republicans finally released their reckless, irrational budget for Fiscal Year 2018 – 94 days past the deadline for the budget process to be completed. This budget slashes investments in education, research, infrastructure, and other areas that support job creation, as well as deeply cuts Medicaid. Republicans are using budget gimmicks that don’t add up, rather than taking our fiscal challenges seriously. Additionally, Republicans set up a process in their budget to jam a partisan tax bill through Congress, instead of working toward bipartisan tax reform. Republican Members are deeply divided over this budget, and it’s unclear whether they will put it on the Floor for a vote. I hope they abandon it and work with Democrats instead to reach agreement on how to responsibly fund the government.
In the Senate, Republicans continue to struggle over TrumpCare. They have put forward a number of versions of the bill and are considering repealing the Affordable Care Act without replacing it. What’s clear is that every version of TrumpCare will harm the American people – kicking millions off health care, increasing premiums and out-of-pocket costs, gutting Medicaid, and making insurance unaffordable for Americans with pre-existing conditions. It is time for Republicans to abandon repeal and work with Democrats to improve the Affordable Care Act.
Finally, this week marked 6 months since Donald Trump’s inauguration. His time in office has been marked by chaos, incompetence, and broken promises to the American people. He has failed to deliver for the American people on jobs, health care, tax reform, national security, and more. Democrats will continue to hold him accountable and urge the GOP to work with us to get things done.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
