Hoyer Statement on CBO Score of Senate TrumpCare Bill
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Congressional Budget Office’s score of the Senate TrumpCare bill:
“The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has now confirmed what we already know: Senate Republicans’ version of TrumpCare will do just as much harm to health care in our country as the House Republican version that even President Trump called ‘mean.’ It would take health insurance coverage away from 22 million Americans, including 4 million now covered through their employers, and cuts $772 billion from Medicaid. It would lead to premiums that are 20% higher, on average, next year, and premiums will increase for those with employer-based plans as well. The bill would also impose an age tax on older Americans. Perhaps worst of all, it allows insurers to discriminate against those with pre-existing conditions, including those who have survived cancer. Those who lose their insurance or are unable to afford coverage would be locked out of the marketplace for six months, leaving them without protection if they get sick.
“Now that it is clear that this bill does not achieve the goal of ‘insurance for everybody’ that is ‘much less expensive and much better,’ it’s time for Republicans to abandon their dangerous TrumpCare plan and work with Democrats to address the real challenges to our health care system.”
